Try This At Home*

April 1, 2009

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you rode down an escalator in a wok? Have you ever wanted to climb a New York City skyscraper? Have you spent hours awake at night wondering what it's like to wrestle an alligator?

Of course you have.

Well, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is you won't be the first person to try these activities. The good news is that people already have - and they've been captured on film - so you might learn something from their adventures before you take the plunge.

For more ideas on fun, safe activities you can try with the whole family, check out our Playlist of April Fools.

*Disclaimer. This entire post is, hopefully obviously, an April Fool's joke. You should not try any of these activities at home or anywhere else.

How Online Content Distribution Is Changing

April 2, 2009

There’s been a lot of conversation lately about the changing face of online content distribution. It's true; we do see our nascent industry – professional, monetizable online video distribution – evolve every day.

In the past few months, many of our content partners – like CBS, Warner Bros. TV Group, and Viacom – have increased their amount of cleared content and/or extended the length of time that we’re able to distribute their content. And there are far fewer situations where we have to take down content because a content owner’s digital rights for a supplemental part of a show – like a song playing in the background – expire. We think these are signs that the industry is maturing and moving in the right direction.

That said, the content we have available on Joost does change constantly, as content owners' rights change, content owners’ business objectives change, or our business objectives change. While most of the time this results in more – and better – content for you, from time to time, we do take content down. For example, yesterday we took down content from Sony Pictures – some retro TV shows and movies. Naturally, it’s disappointing to us – but we are optimistic that we’ll be able to reach a new arrangement with Sony soon.

In the meantime, we continue to bring more new content to Joost. In fact, be sure to watch this space next week – and for the rest of the month – when we bring some news about major TV shows, anime programs and sports that are coming to Joost.

The Guiding Light Burns Out

April 2, 2009

It was announced yesterday that Guiding Light, the longest-running drama in television and radio, will end its run in September. That means that after 72 years, fans have only six months left to catch up on the fictional city of Springfield and the fictional families who live there.

If you're not a fan yet, find out what kept this show running through the years - and earned it an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Was it the brought-back-from-the-dead characters, the cloning storyline, or the kissing cousins? The show's end coming - the world keeps turning and the young are getting restless - so start watching now.

Picks of the Week

April 3, 2009

Here we are, the first weekend of April. It's a great sports weekend, with the Final Four and the end of Spring Training.

It's also the season premiere of The Tudors - but why wait till Sunday when you can watch the full episode now?

And tomorrow night, favorites Metallica, Run-DMC and Bobby Womack will be among the musicians added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

One final clip, before you head out for the weekend. This week, the lawsuit around Heidi Klum's TV show was settled. She celebrated by serving some pizza.

Gotta Love The Hills

April 7, 2009

Early this morning, I received an email from my mother. As I have recently been obsessed with this site, the email is republished here.

Subject: hills ?
what mean things did spencer do to lauren
just watched my 1st episode----love it!

This follows on my mother's discovery, earlier this year, of The City. That sparked this Skype-versation:

mom: i'm watching my first show on joost
me: charlie brown?
mom: the city
mom: loving it
me: haha
mom: great intellectual viewing
me: def
mom: i have to go.....have to concentrate on my viewing so i don't miss any of the nuances (blush)
mom: this show is ridic
mom: worst acting ever
mom: BUT i love it
mom: is jay's accent fake?
me: don't think so
mom: sounds like he's drunk or has a speech impediment so i thought he was fake accent

And then later, mom got philosophical:

Subject: 2 questions
erin, olivia, jay, etc----where do they get the $$$$ for those apartments and clothes?
would you rather have loyal friends or interesting friends?

If there are those of you out there, like my mother, who missed a crucial plot twist in all the drama, you can catch up on all the past episodes now - and there's no better time, since the last season just started last night. And for you fans out there, we'll be getting the new episodes the same week they air - so if you miss the drama on Monday night, check out The Hills channel for your weekly fix.

P.S. Mom, the answer to your question is in this episode.

Ahoy, Matey

April 8, 2009

Arrrr, pirates. Sailing the high seas with abandon, brandishing their swords, paying no heed to the long arm of the law, swilling casks of ale, donning eye patches and striped shirts, and looting treasure chests full of gold and jewels...aye, it's no wonder we romanticize a pirate's life. Yo ho, a pirate's life's for me.

We've felt this way about pirates long before Somali pirates controlled high seas (and certainly before they took the captain hostage). Hero or villian, on the small screen they've always been the underdogs. No spoiler alerts are necessary, because hero or villain, you can probably guess the outcome.

New English-Dubbed Naruto Episodes LIVE!

April 15, 2009

Today is not just tax day, for those of us living or working in the U.S...it's also the day when we premiere episodes of Naruto - dubbed in English - on Joost (and not just in the U.S. - in Canada too).

Many of you have already been watching the subtitled versions of Naruto and Naruto Shippuden on Joost - but if you're new to the story, or haven't really gotten into anime, the dubbed versions are a great way to get started. Or if, say, you're "studying" or at work, it's a little easier to follow along with the dubbed versions than it is to keep your eyes on the subtitles - unless you know Japanese.

Right now, you can watch the first five episodes of the dubbed version of Naruto. Each Wednesday, we'll add a new episode. You have a five week window to watch the shows - so get started now!

Spin Me Right Round, Baby

April 16, 2009

If you're a big music fan, there are lots of live music options for you this weekend. On the one hand, there's Coachella, the three-day festival featuring everyone from Morrissey to Lupe Fiasco. It's a hot ticket - and not just because Coachella is in the middle of the desert.

On the other hand, Saturday is Record Store Day, a kind of Independence Day for the independents - independent record stores, that is. In independent record stores around the U.S. and the world, independently-owned record stores and artists come together to celebrate the art of music. So even if you're not going to be able to make the trip to Southern California, you can probably catch up-and-coming bands like Manchester Orchestra and Nipsey Hussle in your local independent record store.

If you just can't wait for the weekend, check out the Coachella and Record Store Day playlists now.

What Do You Watch When...You're Home Sick?

April 20, 2009

One of the surest ways to get sick is to live in a climate where it's hot, then it's cold. If the weather could just make up its mind and commit to a season, we would all be much healthier.

Unfortunately, it's likely that at some point, you'll fall victim to the yo-yoing weather, or just end up at home sick for a day. Since you'll need to focus on feeling better, we've focused on providing you with entertainment for the day.

Above all, there is one guiding principle to follow when choosing what you're going to watch on a sick day - make sure whatever you choose to watch doesn't require much brainpower, but provides enough entertainment to keep your mind off how terrible you feel.

We Interrupt Our Regular Programming to Bring You This Important Message About our Planet

April 21, 2009

Tomorrow is the 39th edition of Earth Day. Of course, as anyone over the age of 39 can tell you, the Earth is more than 39 years old, but apparently it was less than four decades ago that we decided to start honoring our Mother (Earth). Partly because before that time, environmentalists didn't really exist - at least not in large numbers.

Even while many species have found themselves on the endangered list, the number of environmentalists has exploded. Reducing, reusing and recycling is now a part of our everyday life.

But this is Earth Day, so rather than just living inside of our little ecosystem, we have expanded our boundaries to bring you some of the hottest issues facing our planet. In the first installment of our Docs with Issues Series: Save the Planet, you'll learn about logging disputes in Canada and attempts to save and reclaim North America's Great Lakes. You'll see some of the threats to the Himalayas - and Brooklyn.

And we even threw in some unicorns in the hopes it'll bring a little touch of magic to the world.

We Told You It Was Festival Season

April 22, 2009

All the grime is barely off our bodies from Coachella and, as if they know we're feeling vulnerable and looking for another music festival outing, Lollapalooza announces their lineup. And although the festival has had its ups and downs over the years, this lineup is pretty impressive.

Want proof? Check out the bands who will be taking the stage in August:

How Are We Doing?

April 23, 2009

It’s been about six months since we launched the new Joost.com – so we thought this was an appropriate time to take a look at how we’re doing. And the news is good – we’ve seen a tremendous amount of growth, increasing our site traffic nearly five-fold since our launch. People are now watching a million hours of Joost video every month, and in March, there were more than 15 million video views.

But as seductive as statistics are, they don’t tell the whole story – or the most interesting one.

We have “committed” (in a nod to our engineers) an enormous number of changes to Joost in the past six months. We’ve spent a lot of time working on our content discovery tools, and while we’re not done yet, we’ve already improved our program listing; adding an A-Z list of all shows, music and film; enhanced our search functionality; and added a beta recommendation tool to help you find other shows that you might like. Which is good, because we’ve added a lot more content – from anime favorites like Naruto Shippuden to TV premieres like The United States of Tara – and outside of the U.S., we’ve added German and Dutch-language programming for people in those countries.

Our technological innovations don’t stop there. We broadcast our first live in-browser event – President Obama’s Inauguration – in January, and had people around the world participating in a live chat during the course of the day. We’ve added an embeddable player, which lets you embed Joost videos on your blog, and integrated with Facebook and Netlog to help you share the videos that you like with your existing social networks. We’ve partnered with a large number of third-party sites, search engines and device enablers, including Boxee, so you can find what you want to watch, and watch it anywhere. And we launched our iPhone/iPod Touch application, and now more than 1.5 million of you watch Joost videos on your iPhones and iPods.

At any one time, there are a number of projects that our staff is working on, and these are some of the changes you can expect to see in the coming months.

  • We’re improving the quality of our video, to bring you more bit rate and dpi options. In the near future, we’ll have three streams that you can choose from – high quality, standard quality, and optimized quality.

  • We’re continuing to play with the design of our website. We make subtle changes every week or so, based on our user feedback – and sometimes the changes are more significant. It’s safe to say that in a year, our site will look radically different than it does today.

  • We’re pursuing an aggressive syndication strategy. While our focus is on the Joost experience on the computer, we’re working with a number of different partners to bring Joost to you via a number of different devices.

  • And, of course, we continue to add new content partners to our library. In Europe, we’ll add more native-language programming, and will introduce native-language versions of Joost in some countries.

That’s just a partial list, because we’re not close to being done yet, and nothing, not brain-eating aliens, not cats on skateboards, and not rumors and speculation, will keep us from continuing on our mission to bring video to you over the internet. In the afterglow of the hype of our early days, we’ve had our fair share of critics, but we’re encouraged every day by the amount of feedback emails, tweets, Facebook comments and more that we receive from our fans. The team here continues to work hard, every day, to make Joost a success, and we thank you for your continued support.

Happy Arbor Day

April 24, 2009

It's certainly been a green week around here - first Earth Day came around and then, right in its shadow, the much-overshadowed Arbor Day.

In case you missed it, don't worry, you're not alone - we would have missed it too if it weren't for Charlie Brown. If you haven't planted your tree yet, check out the Peanuts Specials: It's Arbor Day, Charlie Brown.

And just to wrap up the week on an extra-green note, here are some new documentaries and feature films about the environment:

Bad Boys, Bad Boys, Whatcha Gonna Do?

April 28, 2009

If you live in the U.S., you've heard of Television for Women. It's more than a channel, it's a genre. We have our own mini version of the genre here at Joost - with the Wedding TV, Bridezillas and Engaged and Underaged channels.

But nobody ever talks about Television for Men. Maybe because we call it "sports".

There is, in fact, a healthy selection of programming that's just for men. And one new channel - Real Vice Cops Uncut - falls squarely in this genre.

Watching this show is almost like being a Real Vice Cop. You can picture yourself riding along in a van, about to make a bust. You feel the adrenaline pumping in your veins as you bust down the front door of a house and chase a deviant through his house...or maybe you're a part of the detail that guards the back door in the event the perp attempts (pity the fool) to escape.

Although, obviously, not every bust in real life leads to an arrest...every bust on Real Vice Cops Uncut does. And that is the moment of truth - literally. Will a suspect lie or tell the truth?

It's a non-stop adrenaline ride. Get on.

The Top 5 Naruto Smackdowns

April 30, 2009

One of the best things about Naruto Shippuden is the fights. What else is a ninja to do? His job is to take down his opponents, and they don't fight with words.

We wanted to figure out what the best fight scenes were - in the hopes that maybe, just maybe, we'd be able to figure out who the best fighting ninja are. But we couldn't do that alone. So we asked our friends - the editors over at Naruto Shippuden Collector to give us their picks...and the results are in.

Presenting...the Ninja Knockdowns Joost Jockey - the five best fight scenes you'll find in the show. Check them out now, and don't forget - it's a Thursday, so that means there's a new Naruto Shippuden episode up now.

P.S. If you haven't noticed already, this seems like a good time to highlight our new "Subscribe to Channel" feature. On any channel page and below the video player, there's a new button which says, fittingly, Subscribe to Channel. When you subscribe to a channel we'll automatically notify you via email whenever a new video is added to that channel. Check it out and let us know what you think.
