An Update on Embedding Some Anime Shows

March 2, 2009

In a note just over a week ago, we told you that we were removing the ability to embed some anime shows.

We're happy to report that shows from VIZ Media - Naruto Shippuden, Naruto, Bleach and Death Note - are back up on Anime News Network.

Watch Out...It's Banzai!

March 2, 2009

Do you remember the most ridiculous thing you've ever had to do for a bet? How about the most ridiculous thing you've ever bet on?

Well, if you've ever been a part of a stupid bet - or bet on something stupid - we have a new channel just for you: Banzai. Part game show, part skit, and entirely ridiculous - you can play along with friends or alone, at home, at the office or while you're waiting for a plane.

It also features Mr. Shake Hands Man, who goes up to celebrities and shakes their hand while they hold impromptu interviews. Check out Angelina Jolie, Bill Murray and Kelsey Grammer - but before you start watching, who do you think will shake the longest?

A Little Site Maintenance

March 3, 2009

We're doing a little work on Joost right now. The good news is it shouldn't affect you too much - you're still able to search for shows, and most importantly, watch them.

The only difference is you won't be able to use our social features - which means you won't be able to comment or shout at a video or login - which means you won't be able to access your Favorites or your Queue. But that means it's a perfect time to find something new to watch.

Thanks for your patience...and we'll provide an update as soon as our social features are back. And just like the New York subway system, if you see something, say something - email us at feedback@joost.com.

Wonder Woman is All Over the Place

March 4, 2009

It's been quite the week for Wonder Woman. Let's recap.

On Monday, Lynda Carter, the star of TV's Wonder Woman, is launching a solo music career.

On Tuesday, the long-awaited Wonder Woman animated movie hit - what? - DVD stores everywhere.

Now it's Wednesday, which, Ws and all, seems tailor made to be the Wonder Woman day of the week...so it's time to catch up on the mythical story with Lynda Carter in Wonder Woman. Watch her stop bullets with her bracelets, capture dangerous criminals from this world and outer space, and even, save the world.

It's just a day (or an hour) in the life for a superhero.

March 16, 2009

The music part of the ever-growing SXSW starts this week, and everyone's wondering...who will this year's break out star be? Well, maybe not everyone, but that's the buzz around our office today.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

March 17, 2009

It's the day that everyone feels - or is - a little bit Irish. And we're here to help you celebrate.

Up first we have our St. Patrick's Day Quiz. How much do you really know about the Emerald Isle and its various celebrities - or at least American celebrities who claim to be Irish? Find out now!

If you're up for a party this evening, our St. Patrick's Day playlist will get you in the mood with a selection of favorite Irish acts. Like the quiz, some of the acts might surprise you, but rest assured, young lasses and laddies, at least one member of each band or act featured is Irish or has Irish ancestors.

Finally, the Irish might not be known for their cuisine...but these twists on traditional St. Paddy's classics will make your mouth water.

Here's to hoping you all have a happy (and safe) St. Patrick's Day.

A Tribute: Milard Kaufman

March 18, 2009

Milard Kaufman, co-creator of Mr. Magoo, passed away on Saturday at the age of 92.

It's hard not to have a soft spot in your heart for this lovable cartoon character, whose good intentions were constantly, well, ruined, by that ailment of old age - bad eyesight. (And it's hard not to have a soft spot for his creator.)

In honor of the lovable Misters Kaufman and Magoo, spend some quality time with Mr. Magoo today.

A History Lesson That's Easy to Watch

March 19, 2009

If you want to skip the brief history lesson, you can watch the first episode of season 3 of The Tudors now. Otherwise, read on, and you'll get your reward at the end.

History teachers love Henry VIII. The Tudor King embodies many of their favorite lessons: the Renaissance (he was, after all, a Renaissance man); primogeniture and royal succession (his desire for a male heir led to his many marriages); and religion (had it not been for his desire to divorce Catharine of Aragon, the Church of England might never have been born). Students love him because it's fairly easy to remember simplify how he disposed of his six (my, how modern - SIX!) wives: divorce, beheading, natural death, divorce, beheading, and, well, the last one survived him, but died eventually.

Of course, as has happened with so many male figures of history, Henry VIII has been brought back to life for our entertainment. And much like Charlton Heston's Moses, Derek Jacobi's Emperor Claudius and Mel Gibson's William Wallace, Jonathan Rhys Meyers' Henry VIII does not disappoint. Plus, he knows how to wear a pair of tights.

Well, as was hinted earlier, we have good news for the history buffs and lovers of men wearing tights - we have a sneak peek at the full first episode of Season 3 of the Tudors available now. Watch - learn - and be entertained.

Welcome to Rockville CA

March 23, 2009

There are a few male TV/movie writers consistently churn out practically "required" viewing. Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Ron Moore, Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse and Josh Schwartz are included in this group (and we'll do the women another day).

The good news is that at least some of these men don't just write for TV and movies these days - they write for the Internet.

Case in point: Josh Schwartz, and the new TheWB.com web series Rockville CA. The basic premise of the show is something that Josh has done really well in the past - incorporating music, especially up and coming bands, into a story - but in this case, you get both the story and the music in about five minutes.

So which part of the show do you think is better: the story or the music?

March 25, 2009

Many of you have gotten used to coming to Joost on Thursdays to catch new Naruto Shippuden episodes.

So if you're in the U.S. or Canada, tune in tomorrow to the Naruto Shippuden channel to watch the episode 101. (And we'll update this post with the show link when it's available.)

Update: the episode is live! Don't wait, watch it now!

T.I.: Not Dead, But Gone

March 27, 2009

Earlier today, rapper, actor and reality TV star T.I. was sentenced to one year and one day in jail on weapons charges. He was also sentenced to 1,500 hours of community service - of which he's already completed 1,030 hours.

T.I. explains his history, and gives some background on the motivations for his crime, in his series Road to Redemption - which also chronicles just some of his community service and individual outreach programs from the past year.

Here's to hoping he has some access to a recording studio while he's in jail.

Monsters and Aliens and Hauntings, Oh My

March 30, 2009

It was a big movie weekend for the paranormal, as Monsters vs. Aliens and The Haunting in Connecticut finished with the first and second place ribbons at the box office.

As scary as a 3-D animated Reese Witherspoon and a "fact-based" haunted house can be, we know scarier. And we can prove it.

All this should only begin to make you nervous. When you learn about everything that is out there, you might want to stay inside forever. Or find a different safe place.

Babies on the Brain

March 31, 2009

Babies have been all over the news, or at least the gossip blogs, lately, with Madonna's Malawian adoption attempt, Gisele's love for her stepson, and the never-going-away Octomom, for starters.

Well, for all the new moms, expecting moms (like me), adoptive moms, stepmoms or wannabe moms out there, here's a tip. Not only can you use Joost for entertainment - but you can use it for practical information as well.

There are health tips, like:

Or, for those of you who are in the midst of motherhood and might be looking for a few laughs, we have:

And last but not least, here's some cute overload:

Congratulations to all the moms and moms-to-be out there!
