Joost website maintenance

February 10, 2009

We're conducting some maintenance on the Joost website this morning which has required us to put it into read-only mode. During this time videos will play back as normal, however registration, login and most of our social features will be disabled. We expect the maintenance to complete by 12:00 UTC ( 07:00 EST) after which all features will be re-enabled. UPDATE: The maintenance has been successfully completed, and all features on the Joost website are now re-enabled. Thank you for your patience.

We Love You, Charlie Brown

February 10, 2009

Just in time for Valentine's Day (or Black Saturday - to each his or her own) we have a brand new celebrity making his appearance on Joost. If you haven't already guessed, it's Charlie Brown, and really, we can't think of anyone who's a better example of the ups and downs of love.

In fact, it's not just Charlie Brown who struggles with love...Lucy loves Schroeder, who loves his piano. Peppermint Patty and Marcie love Charlie, who loves the Little Red-Haired Girl. Snoopy's loves a lot of dogs...but they always seem to fall for Golden Retrievers. So you see, there's hope for us all.

There are four Peanuts Valentine's specials up now, and here's a little trivia: one them features a Peanuts first - Snoopy as a helicopter and Woodstock as his pilot. See if you can figure out which one it is.

The Stages of Love, Demonstrated Through Pop Culture

February 11, 2009

Like Elizabeth Kübler-Ross's stages of grief, there are many stages of love. In light of the upcoming Valentine's Day un-holiday at the end of the week, we thought we'd demonstrate these through pop culture.

  • Stage 1:Flirtation and Dating

"Does she like me?" "When will he call?" "Should we make the move from a mid-week date to a weekend night?" When things are going well, everything is sunshine and roses...but all it takes is one bad date to ruin the romance. Don't believe us? Check out Very Special Episodes: Dates Gone Bad and ask yourself: does art imitate life, or does life imitate art.

  • Stage 2: Love

"Do you want to meet my parents?" "Let's move in together." "Will you marry me?" The long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, satin sheets - it's all very romantic. But there are tricks to be learned from the masters - so check out Old School Romance, and learn from the masters - Frank Sinatra, Cary Grant and more.

  • Stage 3: Heartbreak

"We need to talk." "It's not you, it's me." "Let's be friends." No questions here...when it's over, it's really over. And no one quite knows heart break like music stars - particularly country music stars. But whenever faced with heartache, it's good to remember that love will come again - as many, many, many pop stars have sung over time. They're in love, they're out of love - check out the rollercoaster that is love on Heart to Heart playlist.

Darwin and Lincoln, Separated at Birth?

February 12, 2009

That's right, it's the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, who "created" evolution, and Abraham Lincoln, the Great Emancipator, today. Imagine how different the world would have been if the mobile phones and the internet and all their forms of instant, text and micro messaging had been around when they were popularizing their ideas. That could have been real fun...

Alas, until recently, we had to read books to find out about these men, and other men (and women, a-hem) who changed the course of history. We are happy to tell all those studying kids out there that now, not only can you check the many -pedia sites on the web, but you can watch, on demand, history and science lessons right here on Joost. A particularly useful channel is Need to Know, where you'll find, among other things, a lesson on Darwin himself. And there's PBS, National Geographic and SpaceRip, too. So kids, next time your parents tell you to stop watching internet video, tell them that you're busy studying.

This is Not the Year for the Paraskavedekatriaphobics

February 13, 2009

That would be people who are afraid of Friday the 13th. Which, if you look at your calendar, you will see is today. And if you flip or scroll through your calendar to March, and look at the second week - my eyes! They burn! Look away! - it's another Friday the 13th! And don't - please don't - scroll/flip to November, where there is yet another Friday the 13th. It's all a little bit too much.

Let's face it - we should all just stay inside for the next month. But whatever will we do? How about watching 13 campy horror films on Joost? It's easy - we've pulled 13 of our scariest, boot-shakingest cult favorites together. We present this collection, A Month of Friday the 13ths, today, Friday, February 13, and we'll keep it up for a full month, until Friday, March 13.

So embrace the fear...and start watching...before it's too late.

Alfred Hitchcock, Still Scary After All These Years

February 17, 2009

In this day and age of super special effects and sometimes-scarier-than-fiction-reality, does a black-and-white film from 80 years ago still have the power to hold you in its grip of terror? If it was directed by The Master of Suspense, Sir Alfred Hitchcock himself, we think the answer is definitively yes.

We just added eight new Hitchcock movies today, which span 30 years of his work - from The Lodger to The Man Who Knew Too Much. Included in the selection is Blackmail, which began filming as a silent movie. Halfway through the shooting, sound on film became available, and the end result is generally accepted to be the first British talkie.

As fits this month of Friday the 13ths, you can find the Hitchcock library, and other scary classics, in Thriller Theater.

Are You Oscar Ready?

February 18, 2009

The Academy Awards are Sunday night, which means that if you haven't already seen all of the nominated movies, you probably still have time if you go every night between now and then, and to a couple of weekend matinees.

But you can save yourself a bit of time, not to mention money, by catching up on all the lights, camera, action with our Academy Awards Playlist. It has clips from nominated movies and of nominated stars' roles, interviews with the on-screen and behind-the-camera stars, and behind-the-scenes look at the "making of" nominated movies. For instance, do you know how Brad Pitt managed to look so old, and so young, in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? The answer is here.

As an added bonus, our Academy Award Playlist promises to make you the star of your Oscar party as you impress all of your friends with your movie trivia.

Jackass, Wildboyz, Real World Brooklyn, T.I.'s Road to Redemption and More

February 19, 2009

We've added loads of new MTV reality shows to Joost in the past 24 hours. We introduce them to you by categories.

  • The "don't try this at home" group: Jackass and Wildboyz. Please, kids, don't try this at home.

  • The "strangers living in a house together" group: Real World Brooklyn. This group also has a subgroup - "models who are strangers living in a house together": Pageant Place, 8th and Ocean. Naturally, once people move into a house together, they cease to be strangers, even though there are plenty of secrets to be uncovered.

  • The "life in high school" group: The Paper. Of course, this show follows in the MTV tradition of excellence in this category - with hits like Laguna Beach and Two-a-Days.

And then, there is the uncategorizable - T.I.'s Road to Redemption. Part documentary, part biopic, part T.I. trying to change people's lives. There's one episode up now - and new episodes coming up every Friday, so don't forget to check back to see the latest.

A Note About Embedding Some Anime Shows

February 20, 2009

Earlier today, we removed the ability to embed shows from VIZ Media - Naruto Shippuden, Naruto, Bleach and Death Note. Many of you may have watched these shows on Anime News Network or NarutoWire, and you'll notice that they're not available on those sites now, either.

We know this may upset you, and we're sorry - we want to offer the best web video experience possible, and we know this falls short. We hope to be able to allow you to embed and watch these shows on other sites again soon. In the meantime, we need to respect the requests of our content partners so that we can continue to offer the variety and quality of programming you've come to expect on Joost.

You can still watch these shows on Joost - like the most recent episode of Naruto Shippuden - and we have no plans to change that. In the meantime, please continue to send your feedback to us at feedback@joost.com.

Why These Were the Funniest Moments of the Oscars

February 23, 2009

There were a couple of very funny people at the Oscars last night. If we could remember the chronological order in which they appeared, we'd organize this list that way - but since we can't, we'll rely on an easier order - alphabetical by first name.

  • Ben Stiller: If you didn't know that he was channeling Joaquin Phoenix, then you haven't seen this interview. And you should watch it - because it's funny itself, but it's even funnier in light of Stiller's performance last night.

  • Phillipe Petit: It's a good thing Man on Wire won the Oscar for best documentary - because otherwise we would have missed Phillipe's charming magic trick and statue-balancing act.

  • Seth Rogen and James Franco: We would like to watch these guys as they watch this Very Special Episode of The Facts of Life.

  • Steve Martin and Tina Fey: The comedic duo performed a back-and-forth that Steve first perfected on The Colbert Report.
