Popetown. Not Just Another Name for Vatican City.
The following is an actual Skypeversation I had with a young lad from the UK who works in our office.
me: have you heard of Popetown?
him: Oh you Americans
him: You mean Vatican City?
him: ;)
me: no...
me: it's a cartoon
him: nope, I've not heard of it
While this story has been good for a lot of laughs this week, there's a perfectly good reason why my British colleague doesn't know about Popetown. Even though it was originally commissioned by BBC Three, it never aired - the show's subject matter caused quite the conTROversy (said with a British accent).
Did it deserve to be pulled? Well, it probably is offensive to some people...but it's also really funny. Hysterical, actually. Which isn't really a surprise, considering the writers and the cast (or their voices, at least):
Mackenzie Cook, Gareth from the British version of The Office;
Ruby Wax, an American actress who's really only known in the UK;
Matt Lucas, famous for his roles on Little Britian; and
Jerry Hall, model, actress, and former Mrs. Mick Jagger
And...the entire Popetown series, never before seen on TV, is on Joost...so start watching!
