Rockin' out
I spent last night at a Roadrunner Records party as Airbourne kicked off their first U.S. tour. For the uninitiated, Roadrunner is a hard rock and heavy metal label.
I was uninitiated. This was my first hard rock concert.
And it was awesome.
I’m hoarse from the screaming, my ears are still ringing and I think I gave myself a minor case of whiplash from all the head banging … and I was just in the audience. I'm genuinely curious to know if the band members can talk in normal voices or if they’re always screaming.
I also wanted to know when the next generation of hair bands would take over for the now -groomed Guns N' Roses and Bon Jovi – and now I've learned that they're already here.
In other rock music news, if the celebrity blogs had you wondering about Killola, they're the band with the track behind the current What’s On Joost intro.
Me too, meebo
Joost Widgets are one of the parts of Joost where we're bringing the best of the internet to the best of TV. Until recently, these were more proof of concept than anything else.
Well, the concept has been proved, and it works, so now we're making them better.
Today we announced a new partner to power our Channel Chat ... meebo. So turn on Joost, launch the Channel Chat widget, and see what everyone else has to say.
If you're looking for a place to get started, try this or this. Plenty of fodder for conversations there...
Develop this, baby
Colm is not a common name. At Joost, there are two. Just like elementary school, when we distinguished between two people with the same names by calling them "First Name First Initial of Last Name," we have a system at Joost for distinguishing between the two Colms. We call the older one "Big Colm" and the younger one "Baby Colm." Sometimes, we shorten it to "Baby."
In addition to their names, both Colms are engineers/developers. They're also both really excited about the launch of our new developer blog. Check out http://blogs.joost.com/dev to find out what the Colms and some of the other developers are thinking and doing.
Or, if you want to meet some of them in person, and you're also interested in developing some Joost Widgets, come to one of our first Joost Developer Days. It's a bit of a widget workshop with some short presentations from the devleopers and hands-on widget development. For these workshops, you should probably have a basic understanding of HTML and Javascript.
There are three coming up:
- London, November 16
- Amsterdam, December 1
- New York, December 7
If you want to sign up for one of these sessions, and maybe meet one of the Colms in person, email dev-workshop@joost.com.
More Joost hints
The day after Halloween – okay, I guess that is November 1 – the holiday decorations came out in my neighborhood. This is Manhattan, so there are no lawn ornaments like in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, but there are wintry decorations and lights all over the place.
In my mind, it’s not officially the holiday season until Thanksgiving, but I’m trying to get into it early. As part of my “get into the holiday spirit,” I thought I’d be charitable and give up some Joost tricks.
So for today, we have some search tools.
| Type these words with your search term… | And you’ll find… |
| type:channel | Matches in channel names |
| type:video | Matches in video names |
| order:popular | Returns results in the order of most-to-least popular |
| order:new | Returns the newest result first |
| order:title | Returns results alphabetically by title |
| subject:music | Returns all matches in that category (in this case, music) |
| subject:every other category | Returns matches in every other alphabetical category |
| count:100 | Returns 100 results |
| start:101 | Begins with the 101st result |
Want to try it out? Search for Jay-Z type:video order:popular subject:music. You'll get videos (no channels) in the music genre, with the most popular one listed first.
As one last winter-themed gift for the day, see if you can make it snow in Joost.
Bubbling over with excitement
A couple of months ago, we opened up our API so that developers could create Joost Widgets. There have already been some pretty cool widgets created, and we hear about new ideas all the time.
Around this time, one of our advertisers, The Coca-Cola Company, came to us with an idea for a widget: something that would allow people to clip, comment and share favorite moments on Joost with their friends. And so the work began.
Today we’re ready to introduce the first commercial Joost Widget – Coke BubblesBETA. Give it a try – download it today at www.cokebubbles.com.
Under martial law
As you might have noticed aroud here, I took a little time off for Thanksgiving. During this time, I did a whole lot of nothing: ate more than my share of turkey and pie, watched some Joost and rarely left the comfort of the couch.
Given my current activity level, I’m looking for some motivation to get back in shape. At the same time, we launched two new channels: Bodog TV and Tokyo Pulp. Bodog TV has mixed martial arts fights, and Tokyo Pulp features classic kung fu and martial arts action films.
Aha – a common theme. Martial arts. I’ve never practiced martial arts, but these fighters and actors are in great shape. So I’m putting myself under martial law, and hopefully pretty soon I’ll be able to star in a dubbed movie too.

TV Anywhere, anytime
