Mom might have been right
My TV-viewing time was seriously rationed and monitored when I was a kid. I don’t remember my mother’s argument, (it probably had something to do with reading), but I remember that I didn’t like it.
As much as it pains me, I recently found something that has me almost convinced that she might have been right. For more reasons than the benefits of reading – sitcoms made me entirely too optimistic.
I am convinced that any problem could be solved if ‘80s TV writers were in charge. These writers tackled all kinds of issues – from gossip and runaways to curing major diseases – and solved them in the space of 30-60 minutes.
Apparently, they only needed 5-6 minutes to get the job done. See, between escaping from hostage situations to lessons about irony, there’s a lot of filler. Take out the filler, focus on the key plot points, and you get The Minisode Network. Charlie’s Angels, Diff’rent Strokes, Facts of Life, Sheena, TJ Hooker, What’s Happening and more – in 6 minutes or less.
And if you want some pure comedy gold, check out the couple with the matching outfits.
